I don't know nearly as much about him as Napoleon. Just the basic stuff you'd learn in school or the history channel. All of which was negative of course, but since everything I heard about Napoleon was negative prior to further study I would feel less than confident putting all the evils of that era squarely on his shoulders.

What are your thoughts on him?

I think Ceasar did care about the plebs, but he cared about his own glory even more. If I remember correctly he left a lot of his own private property to the public in his will after he was assassinated. One could argue that that doesn't matter...because he waited until he was dead to give it up but who knows.

Marius was also like a father to his soldiers. He kind of reminds me of pompeii in the sense he was a better commander than politician (Caesar was the best of both worlds). He was an equestrian (so was Pompeii) but when he first took over Rome he slaughtered anyone who opposed him, lol. That's the main thing that makes me wonder about him. But then again so did Sulla except even worse. That's why I don't really trust ANYONE'S political motives to persevere over their own glory in this era. Besides maybe Tiberius Gracchus and Cato. Even Cicero whom I respect greatly acted a bit rash in the Catalline conspiracy (then again Cato did a bit too)

I'm not particuarly a populare or an optimate guy.

I guess because so many populares didn't really care about the people anyway, and just saw it was a way to get mass appeal quickly.

Cato however, was one of the few guys who was seemingly very ant-corruption. Obviously we'll never know what REALLY happened since ancient historians tend to twist history, but the stories of him killing himself before Caesar could get to him because he didn't want Caesar to publicly "forgive him" (implying he, or the Republic had wronged Caesar) is hardcore.

On the opposite side of the spectrum that's why I also like the Gracchus brothers. They seemed to be some of the few populares that was actually doing what they were doing for the people. Too bad they were remembered as the worst possible thing that could happen to Rome lol

Who are your favorite figures in Republican Rome? We'll call anyone starting with Octavian the Empire era for border's sake (some people consider beginning of the empire to be the first triumverate some go as far as the emperor Tiberius etc)

Not necessarily saying I side with these people on everything, but I find them the most interesting, mine prolly are

Tiberius & Gaius Gracchus, Cicero, Cato, Gaius Marius, and Caesar
